Hitch Day

What does one do when they’re far away from home and tired of walking? Hitch of course! On Saturday, starting at 10am at Snoqualmie Pass, we hitched all the way to our house in Portland, Oregon. We arrived just after 6pm. Eight hours of hitching between 9 different rides! The longest wait we had was probably about 10 mins, and the shortest was about 45 seconds. Haha

Claire and I loved meeting people on this day, and hitching is always a great way to restore faith in humanity. If you put out good vibes, people will pick up on it and pick you up. (Obviously it helps that we are a couple hitching and not just a tall 6’4” guy with a weird hat and dreads). But, we had at least three of the groups tell us that they normally don’t pick up hitchhikers but that they could “tell” we were ok. Also, one group said we were the first people they ever picked up!

These 3 stopped to pick us up in their tiny car WITH their two dogs and even invited us to a lake to swim with them on the 90° day.. Thanks for the good vibes and reggae jams!

This working man has some awesome stories to share about some unreal friends and colleagues out on the trail.


Jeremiah #3

Super nice guy, family man. On his way to pick up his kids to go visit Grandma. Such a nice attitude about life and it was a nice bonus to take a ride in his HUGE clean and spacious truck with the cold A/C blastin’.


Curtis #4

Picked us up while on the phone with a friend he hadn’t talked to for awhile. As he dropped us off he said that anyone who looks like a hippie is good in his book, and that when he was young, long hair used to mean something: Peace and Love. We let him know that’s what we are trying to spread! :)


AJ and Ben #5

Dad and son(?) combo. They lived close by and pulled a U-turn to take us down the country road to I-5. We talked about backpacking and enjoyed observing the sometimes awkward bond between city-boy and nature-dad.


Sebastian #6

An immigrant from El Salvador who has been in the states for 8 months. He picked us up and we sat in I-5 traffic together around the Tacoma area, talking about family, life experiences, and beers!


Okoh #7

I can’t even begin to explain how amazing this human is. 28 years old in the military. Super awesome past. (And present). Picked up a hitchhiker about 8 years ago who is currently one of his best friends and changed his life in a major way. We had some awesome conversation about lots of aspects of life. About an hour into our ride, we put it together that he wasn’t even planning on going South! He literally took about 3 hours out of his day to just get US closer to home! We exchanged contact info and Claire and I hope we cross paths with him in the future! 


Shawn and Sadie #8

A cool “couple” on their third date. They were on their way to get sushi, and spontaneously decided to pick us up and take us to the next bigger town south on I-5. I hope they go far! :)


Jonathon and Frank #9

An awesome gay couple who just moved from Minneapolis. They had just finished hiking up Mt. St. Helens and offered to go out of their way so they could get more used to the NE neighborhoods on their way back home to Woodstock. So awesome!

Thanks to all these amazing, generous, beautiful, varied group of people. We may be different, but at the end of the day we’re all one. :) It’s because of people like you that people like us continue to feel empowered to have the freedom to do what we love.

T-minus one day till blast off! Early tomorrow we drive up to Leavenworth with our friends who scored us the Enchantments permits! So stoked! After 5 days of unchartered nature bliss, we’ll be walking Southbound through Washington for a few hundred miles on our old friend, the Pacific Crest Trail.  In general, my blog posts can get lengthy but normally involve lots of pictures to look at and I use a lot of simple terms like “trail was awesome!”, “had some awesome trail magic!”, “saw some awesome views!”, “stayed at an awesome campsite!”, you get the picture. Day 1. Three Sisters Loop 19.2 miles.

Holy smokes. What a day! Where to begin?! At the beginning of course!  My sleep set up last night, with North Sister hiding out There you are!  Since we slept at the trailhead, we had a picnic table to eat breakfast at and a very clean toilet to get us started off right! When I repacked my sleeping bag into my pack I realized how empty it looked and decided to reorganize my backpack, putting the entire tent inside (which normally hangs out in the left water bottle pocket.) Not too bad for 50 miles and a full tent and food!  I didn’t weigh it but my estimate is “light” :) I was pretty happy with my pack for this trip. The weather is fair and the temps are forecasted high, so I brought my 40° Enlightened Equipment quilt (14oz), instead of my 15° Mountains Hardware mummy bag (2.5 lbs). I also brought an emergency rain poncho instead of a full rain jacket. The one thing I am more stoked on than my gear list are my fellow hikers! Me, Brad, and Nick Brad is my good good friend ...

We’re Baaaaaaaaack!!!

Hey everyone! It’s Claire and David! (David writing). First off, thanks so much for following on our PCT adventures in 2016 and 2018. If you’re new to the blogs and would like to check out my daily blog posts from both years, the address is teeheepct.blogspot.com Alright, so I’ve decided to start another blog to document our upcoming adventure for the summer of 2020. We are so very excited for the big moves we’ll be making in the next couple months!  First, it’s off to the Enchantments in the Washington Cascades for a 4 night 5 day backpacking trips with some of our very good friends! Then, we’ll head east to Steven’s Pass and the Pacific Crest Trail and embark on a 240+ mile backpacking trip Southbound back towards Portland. I am excited to revisit some of my favorite sections of the trail and to get to show Claire them for the first time!  After all that, for the biggest news of all, (If you haven’t already heard), we’ll be moving to Maui in September!
